After listening to the sounds the Elite "speak" I wondered what it was. I recorded some of the sounds and played them in reverse.

As it turns out it, it sounds like Sarge speaking, but it's pitch is shifted down.

Listen to the sounds below and you decide.

This mirrors information posted on xbill's Halo pages, and was announced on the HBO Forum on April 11, 2002.

The mystery was originally deciphered by Jester, in a question asked of Marty O'Donnell in a Q&A database in the Seventh Column chapter The Marty Army (and followed up quickly with a second question), on March 27 and 28, 2002.

It was also mentioned by Chris Butcher at his talk on Halo at the Game Developers Conference on March 23, 2002. (Thanks, Joe Broni.)

Comments on this trick were made by Jay Weinland and Marty O'Donnell, both members of the Halo Sound Team.
