"I cannot believe this shit!" Andrew's breath streamed out like fog in the cold morning air. "It's 0200 and I'm up patrolling for Covenant. What the hell'd I do to deserve this?" "You didn't do jack shit, ace," came the CO's reply. "We're on a mission and you're going to accomplish it, so shut your mouth and keep marching." He turned to the rest of the marines. "We're going to march until we hit waypoint delta, understood? UNDERSTOOD?" The rest of the squad grumbled in acknowledgement as tired feet trudged upon the hard packed dirt. Within the hour, the squad proudly named the "Fearless Few," came across their designation. "All right men, here's the deal. We're going to meet a company of marines from base-camp Delta. We rendezvous with them here and receive their supplies." The commanding officer, Devies, scanned the horizon. "They should have been here already, but we'll wait for them here." "Don't surprise me that those damn Delta boys are running late," came a remark full of derision from Charlie Marks. "Heard those fools ran from the Covies at first sight." "Marks, shut your mouth before I shut it for you." Charlie looked at the only female in the group and began a retort, then thought better of it, remembering a bar fight he saw with her in it. Jessica Delmar was a female, true, but was respected, if not held in higher regard, as a true member of the Fearless Few. Almost two hours had passed before feet began to shuffle in anticipation or perhaps annoyance. Devies signaled to Andrew. "Chi, I want you to make your way down the south-side. That's where they're coming from. Go down the hill and find me some damn clues as to where the hell the Delta boys are." A simple salute and the man was gone, making no more noise than the grass swaying with the slight wind. He made his way expertly down the slope and up another small hill. A light click and the gun's safety switched off, he continued treading towards the south. After about 3 miles, light pops could be heard, like firecrackers. The closer he got, the sound of bullets became unmistakable. The lighter sounding energy weapons became audible as he crossed over the crest of the hill.

"Gutierrez! Cover the left, they're trying to flank us!" Dirt and bullet shells flew through the cold morning sky as what was left of the squad from base-camp Delta fended off a hoard of Covenant. "Johal, get that damned radio working NOW!" Blue-hued lasers seared through armor, skin, bones and earth alike in a gruesome fashion. The smell of burning flesh mixed with a tinge of smoke and ion. "Hold this hill! Hold this hill!"
Andrew, despite his training and veteran status almost, almost dropped his rifle after beholding the horror unfolding before his eyes. His hand slowly found the radio. "God Sarge, it's a fucking massacre... Delta is under attack by the Covenant." "Chi, come again." "GODDAMIT! I said our boys are being slaughtered! You have my location tracked, come get me!" Andrew cut off his communications and shouldered his rifle. "Maybe this is a bad time to pray, but I need all the help I can get. Please let me get through this one." Running down the hill, he counted more than 20 Covenant warriors holding down a small make-shift bunker of dead bodies and supply boxes. Hitting the bottom of the hill, he popped off a three-round burst while rolling to his left. Two bullets deflected off an energy shield, but the last found its mark, digging into a warrior's skull with vehemence. A defiant roar from near-by warriors searched for the assailant, but found nothing.
"Johal, I want the radio up and running now!" Corporal Mungia looked to behind him to check on his radio-man's status only to shout a curse. The radio-man was slumped over the radio equipment, half his head seared away enemy fire, blood oozing with eerie slowness onto the ground. "We're fucked... There's no chance in he-" Mungia was cut off as the Covenant began turning their fire concentration to their left. "What the..." A lone marine had started his own war, for what reasons Mungia had no clue, but was grateful nonetheless. "The boy's crazy."
A laser burst sent Andrew to the ground as it sliced through his right calf. He pressed his back as close as possible to the ground. "Two more frags..." Setting the timer to 5 seconds, he threw a fragmentation grenade over him. A few limbs and blue colored blood was the end result. He turned over to kneel, ready for more melee, only to come across the feet of a Covenant warrior. A howl of derision rang through Andrew's ear as a blade made of energy made it's way down in search of another kill. Andrew closed his eyes in reluctant acceptance, but his death never came. The warrior took a step back in unbelieving horror, then took another, then fell to the dirt - dead from the bullets that filled his body.
"Eight shots, eight hits!" cried Marks in triumph. "Eight shots, no more than six hits," came Delmar's reply as she walked down the hill fire off three-round bursts into the enemies' ranks. Andrew looked up at his fellow squad members. "How the hell'd you get here so fast?" "We were getting' antsy," said Marks matter-of-factly. "Decided we should follow, ya know?"More laser fire raked across their positions. "Damned Covie are getting on my nerves," sighed Marks "Let's show 'em what the Fearless Few can do!" Jessica looked over to where the Delta group was pinned down. "Damned fools aren't doing shit. Guess it's up to us. Sarge and the rest of the boys'll be here soon." Andrew looked at his ammo count. "50 rounds, lets make them count!"
